Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday took a strong stance against corruption while addressing a rally for the upcoming Panchayat elections, promising to completely eliminate graft from the state within the next 3-4 years.
His remarks came in the wake of significant steps taken by the state government to combat corruption, including the recent tabling of the Justice Biplab Sarma Committee report on APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) irregularities.
“The report reveals shocking facts about the rampant corruption during the Congress regime. Apart from the money that exchanged hands, our female candidates faced unbearable harassment just to get a government job. What can be more disappointing than Assamese girls being mistreated in the land of Joymoti and Mula Gabhoru? These are not just my words, but the facts presented in the Committee findings,” Sarma said, emphasizing the disgraceful reality of the situation.

The Chief Minister also pointed out the widespread prevalence of brokers, including land brokers, transfer brokers, and job brokers, during the Congress-led government. He cited an example where even a single transfer posting would cost anywhere between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
“We have not been able to eliminate corruption completely yet, but in my tenure, we have sent over 300 corrupt officers to jail. We are vigilant, and even if someone sends a WhatsApp message accusing corruption, we investigate it thoroughly. I am confident that in the next 3-4 years, we will completely root out corruption in Assam,” Sarma added, reinforcing his commitment to transparent governance.
The CM’s bold promises and criticism of the previous Congress government were met with strong applause from the crowd, as he continued to rally support for his party ahead of the crucial Panchayat elections.
