In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior leaders of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) have resigned from the party and are set to join the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), signalling a significant churn in Bodoland politics.
UPPL leader and BTC MCLA Kampa Borgoyary, who also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the BTC Legislative Council from the UPPL, quit the party and is expected to formally join the BPF later today.
His exit marks a major setback for the UPPL, given his prominence within the Bodoland Territorial Council.
The resignation letter, addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro and issued from Kokrajhar, cited Borgoyary’s “inability to continue active participation in the party’s activities” as the reason for stepping down. In the letter, he expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for the opportunity to serve as Vice President, describing his tenure as both enriching and humbling.

Borgoyary also conveyed confidence that the party would continue to grow and advance the aspirations of the people under Pramod Boro’s leadership. However, political developments suggest that his exit is part of a larger churn within the UPPL ranks.
Along with Borgoyary, UPPL Vice President Maothi Brahma Hazowary has also resigned from the party. In another blow to the party’s organisational structure, Central Secretary Afzal Khan tendered his resignation from both his post and primary membership of the UPPL.
In his resignation letter dated March 1, 2026, addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro and issued from Kokrajhar, Khan cited his “inabilities to participate in party activities” as the reason for stepping down. He expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the opportunity to serve as Central Secretary and extended his best wishes for the party’s future under Pramod Boro’s leadership.
Political sources said Afzal Khan, Maothi Brahma Hazowary, and Kampa Borgoyary are all expected to join the BPF, indicating a coordinated shift ahead of the crucial Assembly polls. While the UPPL leadership has yet to issue an official response, the exits are being closely watched, given the party’s role in the ruling alliance in Assam and its influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
