Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 18 delivered an emotional tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg, asserting both as the head of the state and “as Himanta Biswa Sarma personally” that it was his duty to honour the legacy of the beloved cultural icon.
Sarma urged the youth of Assam to remember Zubeen through “good deeds” rather than unhealthy habits.
“The new generation should remember him not through drinking or such habits, but through good deeds — like blood donation, helping poor children. In this way, we can keep Zubeen alive. We can keep Zubeen Garg alive for eternity,” he said.
In a significant remark, the Chief Minister claimed that Zubeen never liked alcohol and alleged that individuals close to the singer had forced him to consume it.

“People had allegedly forced him to drink. Those around him, taking advantage of his simple and innocent nature, had forced him to consume alcohol as part of a conspiracy to misappropriate his wealth,” Sarma said.
His statement has added a new layer to the ongoing discussions surrounding the circumstances of Zubeen’s final days.
Authorities are currently moving forward with necessary legal procedures in the case, and the state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated artists, continues to evoke deep emotion across the state, with fans and admirers demanding justice while keeping his cultural legacy alive.
