Manipur Congress demands dissolution of state assembly, fresh elections

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has demanded that the concerned authorities conduct fresh elections by dissolving the present Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Addressing the media during a press conference held today at Congress Bhavan, MPCC president Keisham Meghachandra Singh lambasted BJP MLAs for criticising Congress MPs from Manipur for allegedly failing to fulfil their promises made during the recent Lok Sabha election in connection with the ongoing crisis.

Meghachandra stated that the present crisis erupted under the BJP government. He said there has been a complete administrative failure, even after the imposition of President's Rule, as no visible change, development, or lasting peace has been achieved. Therefore, he emphasised the need to dissolve the assembly and conduct fresh elections.

He further alleged that the Constitution has been completely violated, fundamental rights have been curtailed, and people's freedom of movement has been lost. The youth remain in a state of unrest. All these issues, he said, stemmed from the ongoing conflict that began in 2023. Moreover, he claimed that no development programmes have been witnessed since 2021. Despite this, BJP MLAs continue to point fingers at the Congress Party, which is currently in opposition.

Meghachandra also highlighted a growing financial crisis in Manipur, stating that the gap between the rich and the poor has widened significantly. He noted that despite Manipur being one of the poorest states, it is witnessing one of the highest inflation rates in the country.

It may be mentioned that Thongju Assembly Constituency MLA Thongam Biswajit recently criticised MP Bimol Akoijam, accusing him of making false political promises ahead of the elections.

Thongam questioned the credibility of Akoijam’s assurances, stating that none of the promises made before the last election have been fulfilled. “What has he actually delivered for the people since he was elected?” Thongam asked, while addressing a press meet at Thambal Sanglen yesterday.
