Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while speaking on the controversy surrounding the implementation of Uniform Civil Code on August 15 said that the entire concept of UCC is not going in line with the diversity of the country.
Calling the UCC a broad concept which requires proper understanding until and unless a formal document is released, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said, “UCC is a very broad concept. And as it is a broad concept there is something obviously not going in line with the diversity of the country. But the major point that lies in front of us is what is the UCC you are talking about? Because UCC is a general word. You can use the general word anywhere. Are you saying if you show me the Bill that has got the details of it. We will take a resolution according to it. It is an idea. Hence we can take a resolution on a concept not on an idea. It has to be on a particular issue, it has to be on a particular bill, and particular format. I suggest to the press also, there is no use talking about till we don’t see a formal document. It is an idea, a concept that has not taken a form yet”.
Several states in the northeast have been raising issues over the government’s decision to implement UCC that is going against the ethos of the country’s diversity.
