Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang flagged off a delegation of Buddhist monks from the state to participate in the Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela 2025.
The event, which marks one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, will witness the active participation of the delegation from February 3 to February 7, 2025.
The delegation comprises 30 Buddhist monks, accompanied by two officials from the Sikkim Ecclesiastical Department.
Their participation aims to strengthen the spiritual ties between Buddhism and Hinduism while showcasing Sikkim’s rich religious and cultural heritage on a national platform.
Addressing the gathering before the departure, CM Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue and the role of such events in fostering unity among diverse religious communities. He highlighted that the monks' presence at the Mahakumbh Mela underscores Sikkim’s commitment to promoting peace, harmony, and cultural exchanges.

"It was an honor to flag off a distinguished delegation of Buddhist monks from our state to the sacred Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela 2025, this morning from the capital. This significant gesture reflects the deep spiritual and cultural ties that unite our diverse traditions. The delegation, comprising 30 revered monks and two officials from the Ecclesiastical Department, will continue their pilgrimage tour till February 7. I extend my heartfelt wishes for a spiritually fulfilling and meaningful experience as they represent the rich heritage of Sikkim on this sacred occasion," CM Tamang stated.
The Mahakumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, attracts millions of devotees, saints, and scholars from across the world. It serves as a melting pot of religious discourse, spiritual activities, and cultural exchanges.
The inclusion of Sikkim’s Buddhist monks in this grand event reflects the state's dedication to fostering mutual respect and understanding among different faiths.
Officials from the Ecclesiastical Department expressed their gratitude for the Chief Minister’s support in facilitating the delegation’s participation. They noted that this initiative aligns with Sikkim’s broader vision of promoting religious tourism and cultural diplomacy on national and international platforms.
The monks, who belong to various monasteries across Sikkim, will engage in religious discussions, participate in prayer ceremonies, and interact with scholars and devotees at the Mahakumbh Mela. Their involvement is expected to enhance awareness about Buddhism’s contributions to India’s spiritual landscape.
The delegation will return to Sikkim on February 7, 2025, after completing their scheduled engagements at the Mahakumbh Mela. Their journey marks a significant chapter in Sikkim’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote its spiritual heritage beyond its borders.
