One suspected drug smuggler and a three-wheeler vehicle driver were apprehended for trying to smuggle 994 Yaba tablets worth Rs 3.5 lakh by the Border Security Force (BSF) from South Garo Hills on Tuesday.
The BSF during their routine patrolling noticed a suspicious vehicle heading towards Dalu from Baghmara side. The BSF personnel intercepted the vehicle and found that two persons in the vehicles were carrying contraband tablets worth Rs 3.5 lakh.
The BSF team immediately detained the two persons. They were identified as Ratan Saha (30) and Sarat Mahanta (29). Both the apprehended persons are residents of Chaipani in West Garo Hills.
The team recovered 994 Yaba tablets, one mobile phone, and Rs 14,520 from their possession. Ratan Saha during interrogation revealed that the seized tablets were to be handed over to a person, namely Litan of Palpara at Kilapara in South Garo Hills district. He collected the tablets from a person named Muktar Ali at Baghmara.
“Yaba Tablet is a mostly consumed drug by youth of Bangladesh. These red-coloured pills are bought in bulk at Rs 350 per pill in the border areas. After transferring through several hands, it is sold to end-users in Bangladesh at 800 to 900 taka per pill. The demand for this type of tablet has spiked in part due to the addiction of users in Bangladesh,” a statement issued by BSF said.
The apprehended persons are currently being interrogated and the issue is being investigated.
