Assam: Congress leads protest against CAA in Barpeta, confrontation erupts

In a fervent display of dissent, the Barpeta district Congress, under the leadership of APCC Working President cum MLA Sarukhetri LAC Zakir Hussain Sikdar and Barpeta LAC MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, along with district Congress president Rafiqul Islam, staged a robust Anti-CAA protest today.

The demonstration commenced with a protest march from Barpeta Rajiv Bhawan to the district commissioner's office.

Tensions escalated when protesting MLAs clashed with law enforcement over the symbolic burning of copies of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in front of the district commissioner's office. The clash between the legislators and the police created a chaotic scene, raising concerns about the intensity of the protest.

Both MLA Zakir Hussain Sikdar and MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed have asserted their commitment to persist with the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. As the confrontation unfolds, the situation remains fluid, and local authorities are closely monitoring developments in an effort to maintain public order.

Meanwhile, Congress has shown strong opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act. A mega protest was initiated by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in Guwahati, raising slogans against the BJP-led government at the Centre.
