GNRC Cancer Centre Sets New Benchmark in Advanced Oncology in Northeast

GNRC Hospitals announced the remarkable progress of its Centre of Excellence for Cancer Care, which has emerged as a premier provider of advanced oncology services in the Northeast within just six months of its establishment.

Addressing a press conference, Dr. Ashish Malakar, Group CEO of GNRC Hospitals, and Dr. Jubaraj Kalita, Head of Surgical Oncology, highlighted that the centre has successfully conducted 25 complex supra-major cancer surgeries in the last three months. These include high-risk procedures such as Whipple’s surgery, cytoreductive surgery, radical cholecystectomy with distal gastrectomy, maxillectomy, and partial scapulectomy—all performed with safe patient discharge and follow-up chemotherapy at the centre.

The doctors emphasised that the integrated model, combining surgical and medical oncology, has ensured patients receive comprehensive, continuous care. Plans are underway to further strengthen the facility with Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, establishing it as a state-of-the-art hub for cancer care in the region.

In addition to surgical excellence, the centre has conducted nearly 200 surgical oncology consultations, 80 medical oncology consultations, 25 biopsy and interventional radiology procedures, and delivered chemotherapy to around 20 patients.

Dr. Kalita noted, “Each of the 25 major surgeries undertaken at the centre represents a step forward in our mission to provide hope and healing. By offering advanced treatments locally, we are easing the burden on patients and families who would otherwise have to travel long distances for treatment.”

Founded by Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah in 1985, GNRC Hospitals is one of Northeast India’s leading tertiary care institutions with nearly 1,000 beds across Assam and West Bengal. Known globally for its “Affordable Health Mission,” GNRC’s healthcare model has been recognised in international journals, including The Lancet and the International Journal of Integrated Care, and has been presented at global forums in Japan, Singapore, and the USA.

With its commitment to cutting-edge treatment, research collaborations, and community healthcare initiatives like Swasthya Mitra, GNRC continues to position itself as a beacon of accessible and compassionate healthcare in the region.
