GUWAHATI: Assam police have detained a person in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) booth president of Buridihing Gaong Panchayat in Tinsukia.

&nbsp;

Joy Chandra Gogoi (46), a man from the same village, has been arrested by the police in connection with the murder amid ongoing investigations to nab the culprit.

&nbsp;

Efforts are being made to recover the dagger used to commit the murder, police said.

BJP leader Devananda Gogoi was reportedly stabbed to death while was gardening in his house.

He was immediately rushed to a government hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Several leaders including chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma have condoled the death of the party worker and assured to bring justice to Gogoi and his family.

“Strongly condemn the brutal murder of @BJP4Assam karyakarta, Deba Gogoi, Booth President under Margherita LAC. My deepest condolences to his family &amp; friends. Such acts of violence will not be tolerated &amp; I assure that law will take its course to punish the guilty,” CM Sonowal wrote on Twitter.

Condoling the demise of the party member, state finance minister also took to Twitter and wrote, “Shocked &amp; anguished to hear killing of Debananda Gogoi Ji, @BJP4India booth president of Buridihing Gaon Panchayat in Tinsukia. I condemn this act of violence."

The Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has said that the anomalies in job and irrigation department by the state government has come to light. Saikia also said that several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and ministers are running job syndicates. There are brokers of the BJP leaders who have been running these syndicates and one can easily get a job by paying money to these brokers. Saikia said that the SI recruitment exam scam is an standing example of the anomalies. Saikia further said that it has come to light from investigation that several BJP leaders and police officials are involved in the SI exam paper leak scam. Job scam in all departments by state government: Debabrata Saikia

In a freak and bizarre incident, one person got seriously injured in a firing incident in Guwahati on Friday noon. The incident took place at Ashirwaad incident at Chandmari area of Guwahati when a birthday party was going on.One Mintoo Hazarika was seriously injured when one Kiran Bania fire at the residence of Damodar Deka. The injured have been immediately shifted to the GNRC hospital in a critical condition.  According to reports, Damodar Deka is an advocate by profession. Protests erupts in Assam for exemplary punishment to husband wife duo for pouring hot water on minor boy

Sikkim and Tripura has the highest suicide rates in the northeast in 2019. This was stated in a report by the Nation Crime Reports Bureau (NCRB). Sikkim ranked first with 33.1 percent while Tripura stood second at 18.2 percent of cases. The two northeastern states also surpassed the national level suicide rate of 10.4 percent in 2019.A total of 1466 suicide cases were reported in Tripura from March 2018 till February 2020. Arunachal Pradesh stood at the third position with 7.4 percent suicide rate followed by Assam with 6.9 percent suicide rate, Meghalaya with 6.1 percent suicide rate, Nagaland and Mizoram with 1.9 percent suicide rate.According to the NCRB report, a total of 1,39,123 suicides were reported in 2019 and 1,34,516 such cases in 2018 across the country showing an increase of 3.4 per cent in the last year. There are various causes of suicides like professional/career problems, sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss, chronic pain etc”, the NCRB report reads.Other causes included drug addiction, bankruptcy, failure in examinations, unemployment, property dispute, professional problems, illness, marriage-related problems in 2019. Of them, family problem and illness were found to be the major causes of suicide in the country that accounted for 32.4% and 17.1% of total suicide.Assam recorded 242 suicide cases due to marriage-related problems. Meghalaya stood in the second with 16 cases while in Sikkim, it was 11, in Tripura and Mizoram, it was two each and one case each in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Manipur had no such case.Similarly, Assam recorded highest suicide cases in northeast due to illness and family problems. Total 615 cases due to family problems and another 157 cases due to illness were recorded in Assam. Total 403 persons committed suicide due to family problems and another 153 followed the similar path due to illness in Tripura. In Manipur, family related problems led to 23 suicide cases and two cases due to illness.Total nine suicide cases were recorded in Meghalaya due to family problems and 33 such cases caused due to illness. Sikkim and Tripura records highest cases of suicide in northeast

Three foreigners detained for illegally entering India

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Goalpara district Jayanta Das committed suicide on Friday. Das was found hanging from the ceiling this morning at his official residence. His wife and son were present at home at the time of suicide. Das was transferred to Goalpara district as ADC during the lockdown. The prime accused in the SI exam scam PK Dutta has reportedly disclosed names of many influential personalities involved in the scam. Dutta who is being interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) disclosed the modus operandi of the nexus to leak the question papers.The former Deputy Inspector General handed over the question papers in advance to the expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Diban Deka. Based on the leaked question papers, Deka was entrusted with the responsibility of providing training to the candidates at various locations across the state. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora is in troubled water yet again. The Daniel Topno murder case has started haunting Bora again as the hearing of the case will resume in the Gauhati High Court soon.Bora is one of the prime accused in the murder case though he has been acquitted by the Kamrup District and Sessions Judge Court in 2014 owing to lack of confidence. A court in Jorhat has pronounced death penalty to one Sanjay Rajowar, the main convict in Deben Dutta’s mob lynching case. A joint team of police and paramilitary forces arrested a National Socialist Council of Nagaland NSCN (K) cadre near Naga United in Dimapur.Based on specific intelligence input, security forces launched an operation and apprehended the cadre. The apprehended cadre was reportedly on a extortion spree in the area. NSCN (K) cadre apprehended by security forces in Dimapur

Sensation prevailed along Bishmuri area in Kokrajhar district of Assam after the dead body was recovered on Tuesday morning. The body that of a woman was recovered  at Raai Jampwi near Bishmuri in mysterious condition.After getting information from local villagers, police immediately rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Police later ascertained the identity of the deceased and informed her family members. Family members rushed to the spot and identified the deceased as Pramila Narzary aged 40. The deceased was an employee with the Sericulture department. Uttarakhand BJP legislator booked for rape and criminal intimidation

The Dibrugarh couple accused of pouring hot water on 12 year old minor domestic help have been sent to judicial custody.Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori and his wife Mitali Konwar were arrested by Nagaon and Dibrugarh police from Raha late Saturday night. They were arrested while they were travelling from Guwahati in a Innova vehicle AS06V-3839. Both were wanted by the police on charges of allegedly pouring hot water on their 12 year old domestic help. Dibrugarh couple accused of pouring hot water on domestic help sent to judicial custody

Troops of Border Security Force (BSF) under Guwahati Frontier apprehended two smugglers along with 41 Kg Ganja and 353 bottles Phensedyl in the bordering areas of village in Coochbehar in West Bengal. These contraband items were being smuggled from India to Bangladesh on the intervening night of September 9.Acting on tip off, troops of BSF apprehended the smugglers while the consignments were trying to be “smuggled from India to Bangladesh”. Apprehended smugglers have been identified as Rahul Alam and Azimul Hoque.
