Sivasagar Constituency: Kushal Dowari Vs Akhil Gogoi
Posted by :- Atiqul Habib
On polling day in Sivasagar, key candidates have mapped out their schedules to cover strategic areas. Kushal Dowari began at Shivsagar Town High School around 7:00 AM, roughly 4 km from his base. Akhil Gogoi is expected at Lakhimi Nagar Madhya English Vidyalaya before 8:00 AM, about 7 km from his hotel. Pradeep Hazarika plans to visit 72 No. Bhuyan Ghat, more than 25 km from his base.
The constituency has 2,09,976 registered voters, including around 5,000 new voters. Looking back at 2019, Akhil Gogoi secured 57,219 votes, defeating the BJP’s 45,344 and Congress’s 19,329. In the broader Lok Sabha context, the Jorhat constituency segment covering Sivasagar saw Congress lead with approximately 77,936 votes, while BJP’s Tapan Gogoi trailed with under 60,000 votes.
Several factors are shaping voter preferences. Akhil Gogoi is widely seen as accessible and connected to the local population, with many voters viewing him as a “home boy” — one of their own. Upper Assam identity politics and the community composition, particularly the significant Ahom and minority populations, further influence voting behaviour.
At the same time, development concerns persist. Voters have noted a lack of visible progress over the years and frequent administrative changes, such as rotating Deputy Commissioners, which have created perceptions of instability. Key projects like the Jamuna Project, aimed at connecting Borpukhuri and addressing flood-prone areas, carry both practical and cultural significance.
While the Congress legacy still plays a role, the evolving political landscape and the presence of silent voters — a critical, unpredictable segment — make the outcome uncertain. Overall, ground indications suggest a favourable tilt towards Akhil Gogoi, though the final result may hinge on how these silent voters cast their ballots.
