The All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA) held a protest today at Ledo in Assam's Tinsukia district demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the community.&nbsp;

The protest was held at the premises of the Ledo tea estate in protest against the BJP governments at the state and the Centre.&nbsp;

Sanjay Barla, president of AASAA Margherita branch committee, said that in the year before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP had promised and assured that if they come to power than ST status will be given to the Adivasi community people living in Assam but now 10 years of BJP government have gone by but nothing have been fulfilled.

Sanjay Barla further said that they are demanding to BJP led Government both at Union and State to immediately give ST status to Adivasi community people living in Assam, to provide land pattas, to develop Schools and Hospitals of tea gardens and to give Rs 551 as daily wages to all Tea garden workers of Assam. He further stated that the if demands doesn't get fulfilled, then AASAA will be boycotting BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.&nbsp;

Noteworthy is that the Adivasis and&nbsp;the tea tribe community is considered a crucial voter base in Assam and the BJP has been reportedly reaping benefits as it has managed to secure a vote bank among the community. &nbsp;

The Assam Assembly on Wednesday witnessed a ruckus after the Congress introduced an adjournment motion to discuss the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha following a court verdict.&nbsp;

Speaker Biswajit Daimary was forced to adjourn the House twice and suspended two Congress MLAs and an Independent legislator for the day.&nbsp;

As soon as the Question Hour was over, Daimary allowed Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia to raise the notice and asked him to speak on the admissibility of the motion.&nbsp;

"We want to send a resolution to the President of India requesting her to uphold the Constitution. The Constitution is same for all and the executive must act fairly to protect it," the Congress leader said.&nbsp;

Congress legislators donned black clothes and protested at the Assam Legislative Assembly premises on March 29 against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as an MP.

The party MLAs marched towards the Assembly to protest the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi following his conviction by a Surat court in a criminal defamation case.

Rahul Gandhi was found guilty of making the remark about the "Modi surname." The Congress leader allegedly said, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" prior to the Lok Sabha general elections in 2019. during a rally for the public in Kolar, Karnataka.

Purnesh Modi, an MLA for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a former minister in Gujarat had filed a complaint against the Congress leader on the basis of it. He received a two-year prison sentence from a court in Surat on March 23. However, the court granted Rahul Gandhi bail after requiring him to post a Rs 10,000 bail bond.

The next day, Rahul Gandhi was precluded as an Individual from the Lok Sabha. “Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. March 23, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha secretariat stated in a notification sent to the Congress leader.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the legislative assembly said that a letter has been written to the Maharashtra chief Minister Eknath Shinde on the dog remark made by one of the Maharashtra MLAs.

"I have written to the Maharashtra CM to ask the MLA to withdraw the statement made on dog meat consumption by the people of Assam."

Further CM Sarma said that if the statement was not recorded in the house action would have been taken against the said MLA as police cannot take action against a statement made inside the house.

Multiple FIRs have been filed against Maharashtra MLA Bachchu Kadu after he made a derogatory statement on dog meat consumption in Assam during a session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on March 4, 2023.

Following Kadu's statement, the Kokrajhar District Trinamool Youth Congress filed an FIR against him at the Sapkata Police Outpost on March 7. The complaint was lodged by Kokrajhar District Trinamool Youth Congress president Rahiton Narzary, who called the statement "totally derogative as well as provocative."

"Assamese people never consume dog meat. These types of statements sent a wrong message to the world, whereby they defamed the Assamese people and its culture," Narzary stated in her complaint.&nbsp;

"Moreover, his statement also reflects that there is a high demand for stray dogs in Assam, which may bring cruel treatment to the stray dogs."

On the otherhand, legislators from the opposition on March 10 disrupted Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria's speech in the Assembly over a dog meat-eating remark by the Maharashtra MLA.

Following the uproar, Kataria had to stop his speech for 15 minutes on the First day of the budget session, as the opposition MLAs stood up and shouted slogans, seeking to know what action has been taken against the legislator.

Assam Government has formed a G-20 state secretariat for smooth functioning of G-20 events which will be held in Assam from January to April 2023.&nbsp; 
The Personnel Department of the Assam Government has partially placed seven officers in the G-20 State Secretariat. The G-20 State Secretariat will be fully responsible for the overall conduct of the G-20 events in the state in close coordination with the Central G-20 Secretariat.

 
Assam government is set to host as many as five G20 meetings in the year 2023.

As per the schedule, the first meeting is set to be hosted on February 2, 2023, for two days in Guwahati wherein the event agenda will be on the 1st Sustainable Finance Working Group Meeting under the Union Ministry of Finance.

Further on February 6, 2023, a meeting will be held on Youth 20 Inception Meeting then on March 13, 2023, SAI 20 Inception meeting. On April 3, 2023, there will be an event on the 2nd Employment Working Group Meeting, followed by the RIIG Side Event on March 24, 2023, to be held in Dibrugarh, Assam.

Notably, the meeting venue was decided at a virtual conference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Ministers and Governors of various states on December 9 connection with India's elevation to the G20 Presidency.

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter and wrote: "Happy to attend the virtual conference with CMs addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in presence of Home Minister Amit Shah to review preparations for events of G20. Grateful to Prime Minister for giving Assam the honour to be a host for five meetings".

On the other hand, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang asserted that the Himalayan state has been assigned to host two events of the G-20.

Notably, India will be hosting over 200 meetings across the nation in 50 cities and New Delhi has already assumed the Presidency of the G-20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023.&nbsp;

Among other northeastern states, Manipur's Loktak Lake will be among the few selected states which will witness the G-20 event. &nbsp;

The Manipur CM said this after attending a meeting on December 10 for the preparations for the upcoming G-20 Presidency celebrations through video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

GUWAHATI: Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has informed in the Assam Legislative Assembly today that as many as 6,980 families of Sivasagar are deprived of electricity connection even today.“We are living in this age yet 6,980 families of Sivasagar district are deprived of electricity. Sivasagar is known to be one of the major districts of Assam,” Gogoi said in the house.On Speaker Biswajit Daimary’s initiative, the house discussed “power” on the 14th day of Assam Legislative Assembly and it was clearly indicated that Assam yet to improvise of the sector is need of the hour.Citing the latest Reserve Bank of India data, Akhil Gogoi informed the house that the availability of power in Assam in the year 2018-19 is 920 Net Crore Units, which is way lower than even medium ranked states like Maharashtra with 15,815 Net Crore Units.Also Read: <a class="post-title post-url" href="https://www.insidene.com/international-youth-day/">International Youth Day: Health Screening Camp Conducted In Assam’s Dhubri</a>“India’s total availability of the power stands at 1,26,721 Net Crore Units and contribution of Assam is just 920 Net Crore Units. That is our standard honorable speaker.”Gogoi also informed that the install capacity of Assam is only 1710 megawatts whereas India’s capacity is as many as 3,56,100 megawatts.Gogoi also pointed out transmission loss, in which Assam stands at 23 among 36 Indian states and UTs, frequent damage of transformers and accused contractors of using cheap materials and ruining infrastructure of the department.Gogoi on the other hand urged the house for a resolution setting a target for power companies on regards how much electricity they should produce to meet the necessity.“Otherwise these power companies should not exist at all. They cannot produce electricity, just working as middlemen, buy electricity from others and provide us with a higher rate,” Gogoi opined.When the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party members are in support of river dams, especially the controversial Subansiri one, Akhil Gogoi called it an illusion to think that the Subansiri river dam will end our power scarcity.“We will get only 24 megawatts from there. GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has taken a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party Government after two chief ministers of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from Assam and Mizoram have taken their indifferences to <a href="https://www.insidene.com/assam-mizoram-cms-take-border-dispute-to-twitter/">Twitter</a> today and started a blame game feud openly.Barely after a day Union Home Minister Amit Shah's departure from Northeast, who chaired a meeting in Shillong on July 24 with all North-eastern chief ministers and chief secretaries regarding inter-state border dispute, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma got into a Twitter debate after a Mizo couple was manhandled in Assam side while they were on the way to Mizoram."It has become a matter of great public concern as well as appalling humour that responsible persons like Chief Ministers both belonging to same party are openly arguing with each other on Twitter handles and they have also tagged the Home Minister and Prime Minister," reads the communiqué issued by APCC General Secretary and Media Chairperson <a href="https://www.insidene.com/himanta-is-all-about-passing-petty-slurs-cong/">Bobbeeta Sharma</a>.Also Read: <a class="post-url" title="Assam deputy speaker sparks controversy over ‘NE vs rest of India’ tweet" href="https://www.insidene.com/assam-deputy-speaker-sparks-controversy-ne-india/">Assam deputy speaker sparks controversy over ‘NE vs rest of India' tweet</a>Taking a jibe at the saffron party, it added, "The BJP Government seems to be running the country through Twitter handles and social media."Earlier today, Assam Police personnel were reportedly fired at by some miscreants from the Mizoram border in the Lailapur area of Cachar district leaving some police personnel wounded."It is a matter of disgrace that just hours after the Union Home Minister Sri Amit Shah left Assam that such an attack should happen on Assam police personnel and property of Assam Government," said Congress.Congress also asked for assurance from the Government to settle the disputes amicably from whatever they have transpired and policies adopted."Assam Pradesh Congress Committee contends that there is no clarity on the part of the BJP Government both in the states and at the centre on the issues at hand. An atmosphere of uncertainty will further complicate matters," it further added.APCC has condemned the act where a Mizo couple allegedly manhandled by a mob in the border area and asked the governments of both states to make sure that common people should not bear the brunt of their 'lackadaisical attitude'.
